I was talking with my youngest son Kevin this afternoon about all the craziness happening in the world … coronavirus, stock market mania, countries like Italy restricting border access and the sudden, disruptive and uneasy feeling we all are experiencing. We were talking about cornovirsus and VUCA in our conversation and he merged them into a very poignant accidental word … VUCAVIRUS. Perfect description to what we have going on!
It’s just amazing how we can shift from the feelings of relative calm prosperity that we had just a few weeks ago into this cavernous sense of deep volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA). Can you think of a more descriptive term than VUCAVIRUS to describe and frame the very uncomfortable feelings we have today and how it seems to be spreading?
Seems to me that this is a desperate call to action for some real, substantial AGILITY to help us navigate the uncertainty that lies ahead. Yes, we have had technically “worse” viruses in the past – but our world wide social media web is a conduit spreading VUCAVIRUS on its own. While there is no cure, part of the antidote for this kind of virus is building up the immune system of agile capabilities and mindset. Part of the survival strategy for these crazy times is in learning and developing capabilities to…
- Anticipate Change more proactively to help us sense and respond better and faster
- Generate Confidence with all of our stakeholders more genuinely and completely
- Initiate Action on what needs to be done first and foremost because we are focused, fast & flexible
- Liberate Thinking throughout our organizations because we KNOW that yesterday’s solutions won’t work for today and tomorrow’s issues
- Evaluate Results so that we can stay grounded on what success means and create better and faster feedback loops to help us embrace and champion change!
I am sure these sound like highly relevant operating principles to help any organization navigate the craziness of today and the inevitable crazier future ahead. It turns out those are the five research based drivers of agility that we have been refining now for almost 20 years at Agility Consulting & Training (ACT). If you or your organization have an interest in some coaching or help in these areas – this is our wheelhouse and we have deep knowledge and a roadmap for capabilities that just might help your organization adapt & thrive … or maybe just survive. This world is getting more turbulent and consequential every single day.
